I am a painter, painting for a digital audience. As technology permeates nearly every aspect of modern life, the way we view artworks has also shifted. To paint into this seachange, I use digital modeling and programming to create augmented reality apps that allow oil paint to transcend its frame and activate the dynamic space between its surface and the viewer.
These installations populate with animated figures and sculpted objects shattering, inflating, shape-shifting and transforming. Blending musical arrangements and layered imagery in software, surreal compositions touching on the ephemeral, mystical and hidden layers of the world are born. While using the Fragale Application on iOS, the interactions of the audience dictates the happenings that emerge around the painting. A voice whispers over one’s shoulder changing volume by proximity, movement generates wind via the accelerometer and the canvas gently billows. Subtle movements and interactions make every viewing experience unique.
Images of an idyllic and ancestral natural world, archetypal portraits, transcendence and light feature prominently in the work and in my understanding of what it is to be human in a time of endless tech promises and conveniences. I invite you to step into a new way of looking. Not at the screen, but through and with.
